If there's one food that seems to trump all the rest for luxury, it's lobster. There's no two ways about it. That expensive crustacean is something that everyone wants to try just so they can say they've had it. I'll wholeheartedly admit I've always been one of these people, but luckily for me my turn came around this week! Isn't it great when payday and date night happen simultaneously?!
Finding a really nice place to go can often be difficult when you don't tend to know all of the good eateries around where you live. I even resorted to tripadvisor to look for the best rated places in Cardiff! But, after raving reviews from some of my pals, we decided that splurging a bit was completely okay, and we decided to take the risk and go to Burger and Lobster.
[Half and Half, Bacon Cheeseburger and Steamed Lobster]
For groups of under four, you can't book, so when we turned up there was a half hour wait to be seated. But that didn't deter us at all, because once we decided this was where we were going to go, the excitement took over and there was no going back.
If I'm honest, I couldn't really tell you what the decor was like because I didn't really pay attention. Ever so sorry! It was fairly dim-lit though, with a bar in the centre, and red booths and cute little tables dotted around everywhere. There was an in-house DJ though which was kinda cool, it gave a nice atmosphere.
One thing that I wasn't too fond of though was the wall of fish tanks. I know that it's great to be in the knowledge that your food is being prepared as fresh as can be, but looking at those poor little lobsters in their last few moments of life was just so sad. I could see it in their eyes! Even though I sound like a crazy person...
[Drinks Menu]
You're handed a drinks menu rather than a food menu as you go in, as really there's only 3/4 options that you can have for food. Which is great as it makes things simple, but I was a bit frustrated before the visit as I couldn't find a sample menu anywhere! I usually tend to like having a look at what's on offer before I go anywhere.
As drinks go, it's super spenny, but we kind of expected this to happen with the food that we were going for. It was pretty cool though, as cocktails were split into burger cocktails and lobster cocktails (plus more) so that you can find the right one to compliment your meal.
[Abfab Cocktail]
I went for the 'Abfab' cocktail, which was a mixture of Absolut Peach Vodka, Rose Wine, Lemon Verbena and Redcurrant. It was so yummy, considering that I love Rose and fresh drinks. It came served over ice with a cluster of red currants dusted in icing sugar on top, so looked really pretty (I looked a bit of a nause taking about 500 pictures of my drink from different angles, but there ya go!). However Oli definitely wasn't a fan, but then again he never likes my drinks anyway so his opinion is irrelevant.
[He's so good, letting me take pictures of him wearing a bib!]
We were seated surprisingly quickly actually, and on a four person table too which was nice as we had room to spread out. There was a chalk board just behind us which gave the options for food instead of having a menu, which was quite cute. I should have taken a picture for this really, but it read something along the lines of:
'Your choice of main, £20 each:
10oz Steak Burger, with or without cheese and/or bacon
A Lobster Roll with Japanese Mayonnaise (this is completely vague, they made it sound 100% Better)
or
1.5lb Lobster, Steamed, or part-steamed and finished on the grill for a smokey flavour. Served with a plain butter sauce, or with garlic and lemon butter'
...but obviously worded 100x better than that. My selling skills are atrocious!
A waitress came over pretty quickly, and so we were still a bit undecided. We had planned to play it safe - one of us getting the lobster, and one getting the burger, and then splitting it in half just incase we didn't like lobster, BUT, the waitress said that if we were doing that, they'd split it for us. Which was a bonus as we always end up with a big half and a little half when we do it ourselves.
We opted for the cheese and bacon burger, just because cheese and bacon is the best, along with the steamed lobster with garlic and lemon butter sauce, as she said that this has more of a juicy and fishy taste, whereas the grilled lobster is more smokey.
[Lobster tools]
It was pretty cute, as they bring you out all of the tools you need. There was some kind of lobster-cracker, along with bibs, a clean up wipe, and some weird pokey spoon thing, which was the best tool ever when it came to actually breaking into the lobster.
[Half and Half - Bacon Cheeseburger and Steamed Lobster]
When it came out, it looked AMAZING. All set out really cute on a metal tray with Burger and Lobster paper on it, with everything also it little metal pots and jugs. The burger (at 5oz each) was obviously absolutely humongous, and the salad even had a cute balsamic dressing on which was a nice touch.
It took us a while to work out how to tuck in properly, but once we managed to get the meat out of the lobster, we were well on our way. Both the lobster and burger were so juicy, cooked to perfection, and crazy tasty. The sauce went so well with the lobster meat (probably the idea behind it to be honest..) and the burger was full of sauce, salad and pickles, and was just such a good shout.
[The Remains]
It did take us a while to eat, but it was nice because as we were trying to attack the lobster, it meant that there was more time for conversation than usual. We both tend to tuck right in when we eat usually, but as it was both of our first times trying lobster we had a good ol' chinwag about it as we went along, and also worked through getting into it together. Mostly because I was absolutely useless with the shell crusher.
All in all the food was insane. We both questioned the whole £20 for a burger thing at the beginning, but were won over as soon as we tried it. I definitely think that if you go in multiples of two you should go half and half - especially as with the whole 'Burger and Lobster' name it's clear that as a restaurant they do both extremely well. It is pretty expensive, especially as just for a main course and a drink each it cost us £51.30, but I'm being completely honest when I say that you DO NOT need a starter and dessert. I don't actually think they do starters, but really it's no big deal. You'd spend just as much if you got two courses in a normal restaurant as you would spend in here, but you'll leave just as full up, and in no way disappointed.
If that's my lobster - I've had it. And believe you me, I'm already looking forward to the next time. The only way I can describe it is like a sweeter version of a scallop, just bigger, steamed, and with way more tender meat.
It was definitely a meal fit for a queen! Have any of you ever been here or tried lobster?
Happy Sunday,
